Remembering Childhood

This piece shows the conflict which arises when trying to recall childhood. While the past may be analyzed, no matter how sophisticated or mature one becomes, the unique feelings of childhood cannot be accurately recalled. Depicted are three sentimental items from my childhood: a wooden heart-shaped box, an opened geode, and a painted ceramic cat. The bottom layer in watercolor is accurate and detailed, with high contrast, while the overlaid drawing is immature and brash, made to resemble a child’s sidewalk chalk drawing. Thus, the realistic yet in turn even more inaccurate rendition of these sentimental childhood items has been scribbled over with a juvenile touch. The attempt at remembering is therefore partially obscured, showing the inadequacies of it, while the chalk is but an overlay–just a suggestion of true childhood.

Creativity allows me to process and express aspects of myself for which traditional or clear-cut approaches fall short. My art embraces the obscure and is a retreat from orderly, day-to-day life.
