Rollercoaster

Rollercoaster was inspired by a recent trip to Anaheim’s theme parks in southern California. A feeling of cautious wonder and unease is introduced by the bassoon and timpani, as a towering gravity-defying roller coaster slowly comes into focus. The melodic theme provides a hint of what’s to come. High string pedal tones arise, conveying a sense of fear, highlighted with nervous energy, as the adventure slowly begins. Harp and vibraphone notes magically transform feelings of unease into anticipation, as more instruments are added and layered, with the tempo quickly accelerating, mirroring an ever faster-beating heart. A trombone slide propels the music over the peak of the ascent, leading to the whirlwind portion of the ride. But all too soon, a final variation of the original melody emerges, concluding the brief journey, with elation fading to a wistful sadness - until next time.

Creativity is the freedom to express myself through music. Creativity is how new and original ideas work together to tell a story through notes on a page. It can paint a picture of a landscape through pure sound.
