Inspired by the lack of support for people with visual impairments at my local fine arts museum and research on the technological synergy (Bluetooth interactions) of teamLab exhibits, I started designing SculptPads a year and a half ago. During this time, I’ve worked closely with diverse community members throughout my county and iterated through twelve different concepts. Through these interviews and observations, I’ve learned so much about the challenges PWDs face in public settings (namely loss of agency and technological ostracism), and reflected these in the final design for SculptPads. My creative practice is rooted in human connection, “conversations” that I have with my community daily. Only through empathy can I respond with meaningful solutions. Through this piece, I hope that viewers are inspired to examine the issues impacting their own communities and start seeing art not only as a medium for self-expression, but a catalyst for advocacy and problem-solving.

Creativity is about self-exploration: expressing your understanding of the world and the role you play in it. Design, in particular, is special to me because it's inherently based in human connection. Our diverse lived experiences shape our voices, and enable us to make our own unique mark.
