Sunny

I had recently been obsessed with Jimmy Van Heusen's "It Could Happen to You" and dedicated my time to learning it on the Piano, Trumpet, and Saxophone. After countless experimentation with the changes, I had created a new melody following a different set of changes. I composed Sunny as a contrafact to Grant Green's solo on "Falling in Love with Love", using that for the A sections, and taking the last 8 bars in "It could Happen to you" for the bridge. I originally intended it to be a calm swing tune for a jazz combo, but I played around on the drums and decided a latin samba/mambo would work better overall. I wrote this in Sibelius and recorded my own drums on the piece, as I knew best what the drums should sound like in the piece. Plus it’d be too tedious to write out every single hit.

Creativity as a composer means to execute existing ideas in a newly formatted, original manner. Chord Progressions or measure forms may be similar in some cases, but its up to the artist to be creative in the main aspect, the melody, ultimately expressing their intended masterpiece.
