Thank you, Grandma.

Angele T.

Oil paint on canvas.

  • My piece is a celebration of my grandma and all the love she gives to our family and her presence in my upbringing. In the planning process, I played around with having her at different sizes, with or without food, and even attempted an abstract version of the portrait. However, I ultimately settled on the composition being a statement piece for her and to keep it more realistic. Separately, I choose a green underpainting to tie the piece together and to her symbolic green bracelet. Moreover, the blurred background and lines are used to draw focus to her face. I tried to capture her look of satisfaction and warmth after cooking dinner by painting a slight smile and squinty eye. Further, a huge part of my sense of home comes from her and the traditional Taiwanese food she makes in our kitchen which is background to my piece.

  • Creativity means freedom. It means that one can express anything as they please and without being limited by other people. It's the ability to flow and perform and draw and just be. Its when someone does something out of the norm and with personality even if at risk of failure.
