Watercolor, Colored Pencils, Beads, Glitter, and Acrylic Markers on Paper

My artwork was inspired by Josephine Baker, a woman born in 1916, who was well known for being an American-born French singer, dancer, actress, and activist. I used watercolor to portray the soft features of her face, while using glitter to highlight the feathers she would use when singing, dancing, or acting. Alongside this, I used acrylic markers to accentuate the color of her eyes and ensure that your eye was captivated by the motion of the feathers. I made sure to use these types of media for my art because I wanted to captivate the viewer. Women of color are often misrepresented in artwork, and I wanted Josephine Baker to be one of those women who felt heard and represented. Many people are unaware that she saved and impacted many lives through her career, particularly as a spy for the French Resistance during World War II.

Creativity means being inspired and able to express yourself through art, while also embracing the process of making mistakes and learning from them. It also means having a process of understanding and learning new experiences about yourself without limits in terms of materials, such as paint and various media.
