When Death Takes Notice

  • When Death Takes Notice is a piece about betrayal and loss, ultimately highlighting the impermanence of life. The pearls represent my grandmother and her character, as she loved to wear pearls and decorative jewelry. The blood symbolizes the tragedy in her death due to cancer, and how her life ultimately met its death due to the horrible disease that has taken so many unfairly. Utilizing an X-ACTO knife, I carved out the letter as if I were carving on wood to create more dimension between the color pencil, graphite, and the background. I wanted to capture the ruthless nature of cancer and how it brings a harsh reality to cancer patients and their families. The piece is meant to be shocking, as your eyes follow the flow of blood to the lettering. It's meant to blur the line between life and death, signifying the preciousness of life.

  • Creativity to me means being able to represent and express stories through my art, giving a voice to those unable to speak. I aim to highlight the lives of all cancer victims through my work to share their unique experiences, so others going through the same experiences feel less alone.
