The Light in the dark

  • The individual I chose to draw was Yusef Salaam. He was system impacted at the age of 15 when he was wrongfully convicted of assaulting a jogger at Central Park. His story highlighted the racial disparity and bias towards people of color in the justice system. His story stood out because of the fact he didn't let his hardship experiences drag him down. Instead, he took it as an opportunity to reform the justice system by advocating for reform. The symbols I chose to include were flowers, specifically chrysanthemums, which represent rebirth. I interpreted the meaning as starting a new chapter of his life. I chose yellow to represent the light/ faith he had when incarcerated, white to represent a start to a new life, and black to represent his hardships he went through at a young age.

  • I believe creativity means to express myself in a way I'm not able to in my own words, it's a way so I can feel proud of myself outside of school work
