Vandalized Vista

Ari H.

I used a Nikon D3300 Camera with an 18-200 mm Lens. I additionally used Lightroom Classic to edit my images and then layered them together creating a double exposure using Adobe Photoshop.

  • My photograph Vandalized Vista captures the nuance of the Bay Area. My goal was to share the city's iconic beauty and its complex reality. I wanted to go beyond the traditional postcard view of the Bridge by contrasting its beauty with the grittiness of city life. I created a double exposure to layer these opposing elements, merging the grandeur of the bridge with the chaotic graffiti textures found just feet away. The layering captures how the city is a place of beauty and decay and that these are intertwined and inseparable. The photo forces viewers to see the often overlooked nuanced reality of San Francisco.

  • Creativity to me means stepping outside of the constraints of everyday life and looking to capture the nuance and often overlooked pieces of of our world.
