This watercolor painting features a traditional Chinese mask partially revealed behind a soft, flowing drape. I focused on capturing the mask’s intricate linework and bold symmetry, balancing its ornate patterns with the rough, textured wooden frame that surrounds it. The contrast between the delicate fabric and the mask’s striking expression creates a sense of storytelling; as if the mask is emerging from behind a curtain. By only partially exposing the mask, the artwork hints at the layers of identity and culture that are often hidden, revealed only in moments of reflection. Throughout the process, I layered washes to build depth in the cloth and wood, while using precise, controlled strokes for the mask’s detailed designs. The piece explores the meeting of softness and structure, tradition and the everyday, highlighting how cultural objects carry both beauty and presence even in quiet spaces.

Creativity, to me, is the process of noticing small details and turning them into something meaningful. In my artwork, it means transforming textures, patterns, and everyday objects into stories; using careful observation and experimentation to reveal beauty that might otherwise go unnoticed.
