Film has the power to transport an audience, illuminate new perspectives, and bring imagined worlds to life. The Film discipline celebrates young filmmakers creating original short films, video art, and filmed stories across every genre and style. Whether you’re documenting something real, experimenting with animation or visual form, or telling a story only you can tell, we want to see what you bring to the screen.

Meet some review panelists!

Creative Youth Award submissions are reviewed by accomplished filmmakers, directors, screenwriters, producers, animators, educators, and creative professionals who bring a range of perspectives and industry experience to the process. Meet a few of the Film panelists who help recognize and celebrate the work of young filmmakers across the Bay Area:

Adrian Burrell’s practice includes photography, film, installation, and experimental media. Burrell’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions Venus Blues at the Minnesota Street Project Foundation and Sugarcane and Lightning pt 3 at the San José ICA. A third-generation Oakland artist and US Marine Corps veteran, Burrell received his BFA in Film from the San Francisco Art Institute and MFA from Stanford University’s Department of Art & Art History. His works are included in the collections of SFMOMA and Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento.

Andrew Lyndon is a Painter, Animator, and Filmmaker. A professor emeritus at CCA he created and launched the animation program in 2007. Lyndon was also the digital imaging and video instructor at Pixar Animation Studios. In 2010, he curated From Pencil to Pixel, an exhibition of Bay Area Animation studios for The Oakland Museum at The Oakland International Airport. In 2015 he created animation for a new composition by Aleksandra Vrebalov, "The Sea Ranch Songs", which was world premiered in three performances by The Kronos Quartet. Most recently, he was Director of Animation and Cinematography for "Brother" an animated documentary short, funded and distributed by ITVS, and screened on PBS in 2022, and he had a painting included in "The de Young Open 2023" at the de Young Museum, San Francisco.

Nicole is an Oscar-nominated, Emmy-winning documentary producer and director, five-time Sundance Film Festival alumnus, and seven-time Emmy nominee. She most recently directed The Disappearance of Shere Hite, which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, and two episodes of the Emmy-nominated ESPN landmark Title-1X series 37 Words. Nicole co-directed and produced the 2021 Academy Award-nominated documentary Crip Camp with Jim LeBrecht, which won the 2020 Sundance Audience Award, the IDA Best Feature Documentary Award, the Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary Feature, and a Peabody.
