SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, CA (April 15, 2026) - The Bay Area Creative Foundation (BACF) today announced the recipients of the 2026 Creative Youth Awards (CYA), recognizing 572 student artists selected from more than 2,000 highly competitive submissions across seven disciplines - a snapshot of the creative talent shaping the region’s cultural future.
THIS YEAR, 572 STUDENTS RECEIVED CASH AWARDS TOTALING $111,600, honoring originality, technical excellence, and bold creative voice in Creative Writing, Dance, Film, Music Performance, Original Music, Photography, and Visual Art.
Among this year’s awardees is Alara T., a senior from San Francisco, whose visual artwork Zip-tie Portrait transforms hundreds of zip ties into an intricate portrait exploring material experimentation and identity. “Creativity is one of the most important forces in society,” said Alara. “It’s not just about making art - it’s about problem solving, adaptability, and making connections in unconventional ways. As AI becomes more common, making art helps us keep thinking critically.”
A jury of 40 Bay Area arts leaders selected the awardees. The 2026 panels included Emmy Award–winning choreographers, Sundance-recognized filmmakers, award-winning authors, museum curators, symphony conductors, Poet Laureates, and music industry executives - bringing professional rigor and diverse cultural perspectives to the review process.
Seventeen students achieved our highest honors - Presidential and Creative Artist Awards - each receiving a $1,000 cash award. All eligible applicants are now featured in the 2026 Creative Gallery and receive a year-long membership to MasterClass.
“These students represent the next generation of artists and problem-solvers,” said Dr. Emil Kakkis, Founder of BACF. “The Bay Area has always been a place where innovation and artistry intersect. The Creative Youth Awards give us a front-row seat to the people whose ideas, perspectives, and movements could shape what comes next - as well as an opportunity to support young creatives at a pivotal moment in their development.”
BACF ALSO ANNOUNCED THAT REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN FOR THE 2026 CREATIVE YOUTH CELEBRATION (CYC), a free one-day event on June 27 that will transform Yerba Buena Center for the Arts into a dynamic showcase of student achievement - open to families, educators, arts leaders, and the public.
The CYC is a multi-floor arts experience featuring immersive exhibitions, live performances, installations, and conversations - spotlighting the artists who are defining what’s next in Bay Area culture.
The 2026 keynote speaker will be Bay Area artist Ruby Ibarra, winner of NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest and a nationally touring performer whose work blends hip-hop, spoken word, and cultural storytelling.
“We’re especially proud to welcome Ruby Ibarra as this year’s keynote speaker,” said Lani Rovzar, BACF Executive Director. “Ruby served as a Creative Youth Awards review panelist from 2023-2025, generously supporting young artists as her own career gained significant momentum. We’re excited for her to share her words of advice and wisdom to our young artists.”
Admission is free, with an optional suggested donation to help sustain the Creative Youth Awards program. Register now at creativeyouthawards.org/tickets. Media are invited to attend and press credentials available upon request.
SINCE ITS FOUNDING, BACF HAS SUPPORTED MORE THAN 8,900 YOUNG CREATIVES, AWARDING 2,733 STUDENTS MORE THAN A HALF MILLION DOLLARS IN CASH PRIZES.
