An Image of Self

Jocelyn C.

  • This choreography was created to the song “That Home” by The Cinematic Orchestra. From the first time I heard it, I deeply resonated with the lyrics: “This is a place where I don't feel alone, this is a place that I call my home.” Reflecting upon my journey of discovering my own identity and self-belief, I realized that the truest sense of home is within oneself. The piece begins with movements that conceal and protect, representing insecurity and lack of faith in one’s authenticity, and gradually unfolds into openness and vulnerability, leaving nothing to hide. Through this progression, the dance embodies the universal struggle toward self-love and compassion, culminating in a moment of clarity of seeing oneself honestly, without the toxic back and forth of negative voices reflecting nothing but self hatred. This work is my reflection of the journey toward embracing one’s own worth and finding comfort within.

  • Creativity means expressing one's unique values and perspectives through the process of creating something entirely original and authentic that conveys a central message. In dance, creativity means exploring new movement patterns and ranges of tempos to generate a storyline that can make the audience and the performer feel something.
