La Perla

Adrian A.

  • The creation of this piece began with searching for the right song. I kept listening nonstop until I came across Rosalía’s newest album, LUX, and one track immediately caught my attention. All of my choreographic sessions begin with improvisation—often in the dark, with the music blasting—so I can fully immerse myself in it and hear the nuances of the sound. The blend of a Latin waltz and distinct orchestral elements prompted me to explore musicality in new ways. Rosalía describes the writing of “La Perla” as an exercise in letting go and forgiveness, so I incorporated movements that expressed freedom and release. I also used sharp contrasts and dynamic motions to evoke the resentment she conveys toward someone who played with her emotions. This piece is especially meaningful to me because it’s my first time choreographing to a song in my native language. It’s a celebration of my cultural identity.

  • For me, creativity is a way to express feelings that can’t be fully explained with words. When I dance, I draw inspiration from the people I meet and the meaningful moments I experience. Through that, creativity becomes an expressive outlet and remains deeply therapeutic.
