The Twelfth of Never

Sasha M.

  • My choreography, The Twelfth of Never, is inspired by living with a parent who has muscular dystrophy. My father has used a wheelchair since I was five, and witnessing his loss of physical control taught me how deeply we take our own bodies for granted. This piece explores contrasting movement qualities: slow, expansive phrases symbolizing calm resilience, and sharp, restrained motions expressing frustration and the desire to break free. Gestures toward the heart reflect my childhood shame and my later appreciation for the lessons his disability has given me. Through this work, I express love, strength, and the enduring joy of life, the certainty that I will love him, even until The Twelfth of Never.

  • For many, dance is an escape from life’s hardships, but for me, it is a way to confront and understand them. Movement helps me process difficult emotions, push through challenges, and find clarity and peace. Dance is not a refuge but rather a path toward growth.
