Nocturne, C Sharp Minor, Opus 27 No. 1

Max L.

  • Chopin’s Op. 27 nocturnes are some of his grandest and most dramatic. The first of these nocturnes (in C-Sharp Minor) is characterized by large arpeggios, multiple changes in tempo, stark dynamic contrasts, and sweeping melodic lines. It was a challenge to play these elements in a way that did justice to the piece. The arpeggios in particular were difficult to play both musically and technically. They varied in texture, speed, and size while also providing the foundation of many of the harmonic changes in the piece. One of the other challenges of the piece is creating interest in the first theme- since it repeats multiple times, it is important to bring out the nuances and changes in it with each iteration. These challenges make the piece all the more interesting to learn and play, helping me push my creativity and advance as a musician.

  • When I play the piano, the focus and concentration required are both exhausting and gratifying. The end result is always something new, and provides insight into the music itself. Creativity to me is a way of expressing emotions ranging from exhilaration to heartbreak in a way not found elsewhere.
